Do You Need a Base Coat Under Hard Gel?
A hard gel does not automatically require the same base underneath in every service. The answer depends on the gel system, the natural nail, and the application technique. With LiNTO, choose the complete protocol before deciding whether to add or remove a foundation layer.
A flexible foundation under gel
BASE FRAME is primarily positioned as a flexible foundation, including under REPAIR GEL. LiNTO’s guidance also uses it in appropriate transitions from acidic materials.
In that route, the thin foundation is applied and cured before the structural gel. It is not a replacement for the strengthening layer and should not be built into extra bulk by habit.
Direct gel is a separate technique
LiNTO’s REPAIR GEL guidance also describes services using a thin gel layer before the leveling layer under defined conditions. Those instructions include specific consideration of the natural free edge, such as extension or trained underside refinement.
This is not permission to omit the base from any familiar service. A change in foundation can require a change in technique.
Make the decision before application
- Identify the exact gel and its current instructions.
- Review the nail condition and coating history.
- Choose the intended free-edge and structural technique.
- Confirm the preparation and curing requirements.
Do not mix a direct-gel instruction from one protocol with preparation steps from another. If you are unsure, ask LiNTO technical support to review the whole sequence. A clear, consistent protocol is more valuable than a universal yes or no about base coats.
